1 in 2 New Zealanders have a taste for craft beers

While well-established favourites continue to prove a popular choice for New Zealanders, more than one in two respondents to our recent survey of beer drinkers told us they enjoyed trying beers made by small producers – such as boutique and craft beer brands.
Respondents from Wellington and Otago were more inclined to sample the labours of craft brewers (just over 60% each), while fewer respondents from Canterbury agreed (46%).
New Zealand shoppers considered different things when deciding which lager, ale or pilsner to purchase. For example, a third of respondents refused to drink anything but their favourite beer brands. On the other hand, two in five were content to purchase whatever beer was on special at the time.
Interestingly, New Zealander’s beer of choice comes from the shores of Mexico, with South American brand Corona achieving our most satisfied customers award for beer in 2013.
Many of our rated brands also performed well:
- Corona achieved five stars for overall customer satisfaction, beer taste and packaging.
- Tui were five star leaders for value for money,
- Speights received five stars for the availability of its products, and
- Stella Artois achieved five stars for taste and the image associated with its beer.

The survey results also showed three quarters of New Zealanders were in favour of lowering the alcohol limit. Furthermore, 85% always used a designated driver or taxi when drinking away from home.
A significant number of Kiwis also took two nights off each week to stay alcohol-free (77%). We reported a similar statistic in our
2012 results.
Canstar Blue commissions Colmar Brunton Australia to survey 2,500 New Zealand consumers across a range of categories every few months to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from beer customers within the survey group - in this case, 1336 people. To qualify, the customer must have purchased and consumed a beer in the last 3 months. Brands must receive at least 30 responses to be included.
Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands that received three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10.
