More than half of New Zealand shoppers feel confident they could talk their way to a better price when buying electronics, according to our latest survey.
Surprisingly, Generation Y shoppers (who in 2008 spent NZ$60 million on entertainment, fashion, sport, travel and music) were the least likely to haggle for a better deal on their purchase.
Shoppers in Christchurch were less likely to negotiate for a cheaper price with only 42% of shoppers haggling compared to the national average of 54%.
Our survey also revealed the standout brands for stores that sell gadgets, gizmos and Gameboys, with 100% (also known as 100% Appliances) receiving our most satisfied customers award for electronics retailers.
The New Zealand brand received a five star rating for every criteria including overall satisfaction, price, service, product range and appearance of store.
Other brands rated were The Good Guys, Harvey Norman, Dick Smith, JB Hi-Fi, Noel Leeming, The Warehouse and Bond and Bond.
Our survey also found another way shoppers are saving – with 76% of Kiwi shoppers researching the price of potential purchases online before making a decision.
A little more than half of Generation X shoppers turned to their electronics stores for financing these purchases; 20% more than Generation Y and Baby Boomer respondents.
Canstar Blue commissions Colmar Brunton Australia to survey 2,500 New Zealand consumers across a range of categories every few months to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers of electronics retailers within the survey group. To qualify, the customer must have purchased a product from an electronics retailer in the past six months.
Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands that received three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10.
Overall
100% have the most satisfied customers for electronics retailers with five stars overall. The Good Guys received four stars overall while Harvey Norman, Dick Smith, JB Hi-Fi, Noel Leeming, The Warehouse and Bond and Bond received three stars.
Price
For price, five stars go to 100% and The Warehouse. The Good Guys and JB Hi-Fi received four stars while Harvey Norman, Dick Smith, Noel Leeming and Bond and Bond received three stars.
Point of sale service
Receiving another five stars for point of sale service, 100% managed to outsprint the rest of the competition – just nudging out The Good Guys who received four stars. Harvey Norman, Dick Smith, JB Hi-Fi, Noel Leeming, The Warehouse and Bond and Bond received three stars.
After sale service
100% received a further five stars for after sale service, while The Good Guys, Harvey Norman, Dick Smith, JB Hi-Fi, Noel Leeming, The Warehouse and Bond and Bond all receive three stars.
Product range
100% is joined by The Good Guys for a five star rating apiece for their range of products. Harvey Norman, Dick Smith, JB Hi-Fi, Noel Leeming, and Bond and Bond all received four stars while The Warehouse received three for their range.
Store appearance
Once more The Good Guys and 100% both earned a five star rating, this time for appearance of the store (and the ease of finding products). Harvey Norman, Dick Smith and Noel Leeming all received four stars for appearance while JB Hi-Fi, The Warehouse and Bond and Bond received three stars.
