coffee habits nzThe latest Canstar Blue survey has shown that New Zealanders love the ability to make their own café-style coffee with close to half (49%) saying that they prefer the coffee they make at home to that bought in a café.

A similar amount of people surveyed (48%) said that they are drinking more coffee since they purchased their espresso machine.

The majority of Kiwis are also fairly confident in their barista abilities (78%), especially when making coffee for guests; New Zealanders are really getting behind their at-home coffee machines, most likely because 70% have said that they have saved a lot of money by no longer purchasing café-made coffees.

Here are some fun facts about our coffee buying, making and drinking habits around the country, based on the Canstar Blue survey of 612 people who have purchased and used an espresso coffee machine in the last 3 years.

Auckland: Aucklanders are most likely to be confident in their at-home barista skills when making coffee for guests (81%).

Waikato: Those in the Waikato are most likely (equal with Otago) to only buy organic coffee beans/grinds (22%).

Wellington: Wellingtonians are least likely to prefer the coffee they make at home to that bought in a café (44%), least likely to drink more than 5 cups of coffee a day (17%), most likely to get a withdrawal headache when they cut down on their coffee consumption (28%), least likely to still drink instant coffee even though they have access to a coffee machine (50%), least likely to try new coffee flavours (64%) and least likely to say that a home-brewed coffee is a special treat (57%).

Canterbury: Cantabrians are most likely to prefer the coffee they make at home to that bought in a café (55%), least likely to drink more coffee since they bought their coffee machine (41%), least likely to be confident in their at home barista skills when making coffee for guests (71%), most likely to still drink instant coffee even though they have access to a coffee machine (67%) and most likely to say that a home-brewed coffee is a special treat (71%).

Otago: Those in Otago are most likely to say that having their own coffee machine has saved them money on café coffees (78%), most likely to drink more coffee since they bought their own coffee machine (54%), most likely to drink more than 5 cups of coffee a day (32%), most likely (equal with Waikato) to only buy organic grinds/beans (22%) and least likely to get a withdrawal headache when they cut down on their coffee consumption (16%).

Bay of Plenty: Those in the Bay of Plenty are least likely to say that having their own coffee machine has saved them more money on café coffees (60%), least likely to only buy organic beans/grinds (14%) and most likely to try new coffee flavours (83%).
