Is your dip choices healthy or unhealthy?

Whether it’s a house party or just a quick catch-up, food dips can be the perfect snack. But a new survey by Canstar Blue shows that New Zealand is a country divided between those who reach for healthy or unhealthy dipping options.

The nationwide survey, of almost 1,500 adults who have bought and eaten any type of food dip over the last three months, found that Kiwis are more likely to enjoy their favourite flavour with potato chips rather than vegetables. 69% enjoy eating dip with potato chips, while 58% like it with vegetables.

However, there were some noticeably different dipping preferences reported in the regions, with consumers in Waikato the most likely to go with chips (79%) and amongst the least likely to reach for veggies (54%).

Meanwhile those from Taranaki (75%) were the most inclined to reach for vegetables, but equally likely to be enticed by a packet of chips (75%). Respondents from Northland were the least likely to go for the healthier option (51%).

Canstar New Zealand General Manager, Jose George, said there were also some interesting differences between the generations and genders.

“Young Gen Y Kiwis are much more likely than their parents or grandparents to reach for the potato chips, but baby boomers are actually the least likely to go for vegetables,” he said. “Perhaps less surprising is that men are keener on chips and women more likely to grab some veggies.”

New Zealand’s favourite dip brands

Survey respondents were also asked to rate the brand of dip they most recently purchased on factors like its taste, texture and whether they thought it was good value for money.

Ten different brands featured in the results, but only Mediterranean achieved five-star reviews for taste and texture. It also scored top marks on value, variety and packaging, while the only other top marks went to Just Hummus on value and Lisa’s for variety.

“When it comes to food dips, it’s really all about the taste. And no matter what people choose to dip with, it’s clear that Mediterranean has struck a winning balance between quality and price.”
