We care what happens to our world
When it comes to what we wash our clothes in, most of us have a preference for either powder or liquid. For some, it’s the more traditional, and often cheaper, powder every time. For the rest of us, the convenience of a pre-dissolved detergent and the ability to ‘spot’ stains with the liquid before washing means that liquid is our washing weapon of choice.
Whatever your preferred option, laundry detergent (in whatever form) is something we all need but, for over one third of us, an eco- friendly product that has less impact on our environment is a preferred option. In addition 31% of people said that they choose a low irritant brand that is better for sensitive skin.
This is great news for brands such as the Canstar Blue overall customer satisfaction winner Earthwise, who build and develop their products on environmentally friendly foundations. It’s also great news for us consumers who want to limit the negative impact we can have on the world around us.
But apart from sustainability, what else is it that we value when it comes to keeping our whites white and our colours fast? In the recent Canstar Blue survey we asked 334 people what they looked for in their laundry liquid…
Feel of clothes after wash
This rated as one of the highest drivers of satisfaction in our survey. It turns out we don’t just want our clothes clean, we want them to feel good too and our guess is that people aren’t pining for the starched crunch of Grandma’s bed sheet kind of sensation either!
Earthwise laundry liquid rated a maximum five stars in this category along with Dynamo, Persil and Surf.
Quality of clean
Your favourite top or shirt with a nasty stain right down the front is never a good look. What’s worse is when you’ve put it through the wash and the stain still sticks like glue. Wanting our clothes to come out of the washing machine looking cleaner than when they went in is probably why quality of clean also rated as one of the most important features we look for in our detergents.
Earthwise laundry liquid was the only brand to score a maximum five stars in this category.
Value for money
We always like to think we’re getting bang for our buck, but when it comes to our laundry liquid this isn’t as high up the priority list. If you do have one eye on the price tag, you’ll be pleased to know that Earthwise and Surf both rated five stars in value for money.
According to scientists, we have the ability to smell over a trillion different odours. For many of us one of our favourites is the aroma of freshly laundered washing so the fragrance of our detergent is pretty significant. Our survey revealed that for women, fragrance (or scent) was slightly more important than for men, but maybe that’s because the scientists (yes, the same ones!) say that women have a better sense of smell than the opposite sex.
With exotic bouquets including tropical lily and ylang ylang or summer lemons and orange blossom, Surf was the only brand to achieve five stars in this category.
As well as packaging a product in a way that’s robust, easy to store and generally helpful to consumers, for two of our three five star winners in this category (Earthwise and Ecostore), it’s also about minimising waste and recycling. Earthwise, Ecostore and Surf scored five stars.
With the philosophy that we can all make a difference, overall Canstar Blue customer satisfaction winner for laundry liquids, Earthwise, believe that small positive changes can have a huge impact. Paraben and phosphate free Earthwise scored a maximum five stars for environmental friendliness, as did Ecostore.
Frequently asked questions
Canstar Blue commissioned I-view to survey 2,500 New Zealand consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from customers who have purchased and used laundry detergent (liquid) in the last 3 months – in this case, 334 New Zealanders.
Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then alphabetically. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.
