NZ’s biggest fan? Living & Co! Rated the No.1 brand of fans Kiwis chill with over summer!

How we rate fans

Our review compares fans on customer satisfaction, so you can discover what other Kiwis think about our compared fan brands before you go ahead and make a purchase. Think of it like asking hundreds of your closest mates which fan brand they think is best!

Canstar Blue surveyed 560 Kiwis who had bought fans to use at home in the last three years and asked for their feedback on the fan they bought.

  • The outcomes reported in these ratings are measured via accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics.

Respondents rate their satisfaction with their fan brands from zero to ten, where zero is extremely dissatisfied and ten is extremely satisfied. Brand satisfaction was rated by respondents on the following criteria:

  • Overall Satisfaction: measures consumer satisfaction with a fan brand as an individual score NOT a combined total of all criteria.
  • Value for Money: the cost is low for the quality and performance of the fan.
  • Performance: the fan cools effectively, hasn’t broken (i.e. is without faults) and its performance hasn’t reduced over time.
  • Ease of Use: settings and functions are easy to locate and use.
  • Design: the fan size suits its purpose and the appearance/finish of the appliance is aesthetically pleasing.
  • Functions & Features: the fan has adequate cooling functions and extra features, such as a timer, remote, etc.

The winning brand is the one that receives the highest Overall Satisfaction rating once all the scores from the Overall Satisfaction criteria are combined and averaged.

  • Overall Satisfaction is asked as a specific question and represents an individual measure, not a combined total of all criteria.
  • When we cannot determine a clear winner from the criteria for the Overall Satisfaction rating, we will then look at the other criteria measured in the rating.
    • The brand with the highest number of five-star ratings within the supporting criteria will become the five-star recipient in overall satisfaction, and thus win the award. If a clear leader still cannot be determined from the supporting criteria, joint winners will be declared.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included, so not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The brands rated in this survey are listed below in order of best overall satisfaction.

Currently on offer from Living & Co

Living & Co USB Desk Fan

Desk fans

As the name suggests, desk fans are exactly that: small fans that are ideal for cooling a small area, like around a desk. Desk fans are often powered by USB, meaning they can be plugged into your laptop for easy use.

Living & Co offers an affordable range of desk fans, starting from just $6.

Living & Co High Velocity Floor Fan

Floor fans

Floor fans are usually larger than desk fans and offer a stronger cooling across a wider area. These fans are also more expensive than desk fans, starting at around $30.

Pedestal fans

Living & Co Pedestal Fan

Pedestal fans earn their name from their adjustable stands. Pedestal fans can be lowered to the height of your average floor fan, or lifted to provide a larger overall cooling area. Living & Co currently have four pedestal fans on offer, prices beginning at $25.

Tower fans

Living & Co Tower Fan with Timer & Remote

Tower fans are a high-end type of floor fan. Living & Co tower fans have extra bells and whistles, including:

  • Bladeless technology
  • Timer functions
  • Real-time room temperature display
  • Multiple speed settings
  • Remote control

However, these extra features come at a cost: Living & Co’s tower fans start at $69.

Goldair

Ratings Results

Goldair scores well in this year’s ratings, earning an almost perfect string of 4-Star ratings, including for Overall Satisfaction. Goldair earns top 5-Star ratings for the remaining two categories: Performance and Ease of Use.

Editor’s Notes

For nearly 40 years, Goldair’s portable and fixed cooling appliances have kept homes comfortable over the hot summer months.

The brand has an impressive line-up of fans, including:

  • Desk fans
  • Ceiling fans
  • Wall fans
  • Pedestal fans
  • Tower fans
  • Evaporative coolers
  • Portable air conditioners

Desk fans

Small, portable fans that provide direct air flow.

Ceiling fans

A great option when you have limited floor space. Use in summer to cool down your room quickly, or choose the winter setting to assist your heater in spreading warm air throughout your space.

Wall fans

Easily attaches to walls. Ideal for medium to large rooms with not a lot of floor space.

Pedestal fans

Built to suit any room type, a key cooling solution for any home or work space. Feature a handy adjustable stand.

Tower fans

One of the most popular fan models. Compact design saves valuable floor space while still able to produce a strong cool breeze that can cool any room.

Evaporative coolers

Works by drawing air over a water system to harness the cooling effect of evaporation to provide chilled air to your room.

Portable air conditioners

Include most of the features of a traditional heat pump unit but with added mobility, so you can move it around your home. Can be used to heat rooms over winter, too.

Dyson

Dyson

Ratings Results

Dyson earns a 3-Star rating for overall customer satisfaction, which indicates that consumers are satisfied with their purchase. The brand scores top ratings for Performance, Design and Functions & Features. Dyson also scores highly for Ease of Use and earns another 3-Star rating for Value for Money.

Editor’s Notes

Dyson fans are renowned for their unique, bladeless design. According to Dyson, the breeze generated by these devices is more consistent and steadier than that from a standard fan with blades. Since there are no rotating blades, the breeze from the fan doesn’t buffet you with short gusts of air.

Dyson currently has two fans available on their website:

Hot + Cool Jet Focus

  • Fan cools you in summer and heater keeps you warm in winter
  • Multiplies surrounding air, giving an uninterrupted stream of smooth airflow. No blades, no choppy air
  • Diffused mode for whole-room heating or a gentle breeze
  • Comes with a magnetised remove control

Dyson Cool Tower Fan

  • Multiplies airflow by up to 15 times, to cool you fast
  • Sleep timer: Programmed to turn off after pre-set intervals. Minimises wasted energy
  • Safe, with no fast-spinning blades
  • Easy to clean: no awkward safety grille or blades. Simply wipe with a dry or damp cloth
  • Comes with a magnetised remote control

Choosing the right fan for you

Fan needs vary from person to person, depending on the size of the space you’re cooling and what design you prefer. But whether you’re after a gentle breeze at your desk, or a heavy duty fan for your bedroom, two things are paramount: performance and value for money.

In our survey, almost a third of respondents rate their fan purchases on how effectively they cool. That’s the same percentage (30%) that bases their purchases on Value for Money. Ease of Use ranks at the bottom of the list of influencing factors. It’s understandable, as most fans are fairly straightforward to operate.

Here’s the full rundown of what consumers in our survey say are the main things they consider when rating their fan picks:

  • Performance: 30%
  • Value for Money: 30%
  • Design: 14%
  • Functions & Features: 14%
  • Ease of Use: 13%

Canstar Blue surveyed 2505 New Zealand consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction, via ISO 26362 accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics. The outcomes reported are the results from respondents who had purchased and used an air fryer in the past three months. In this case, 560 New Zealanders.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then by mean overall satisfaction. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criterion.
