Algae, mould, moss and mildew on the outside of our homes are not only unsightly, they can be dangerous, too. Black slimy decks and paths are as slippery as ice and can lead to nasty falls.
And after a long, wet winter, cleaning the outside our homes can be a dirty job. But, thankfully, there are plenty of cleaning products on the market that promise to help speed up the job. Just plug in a hose, spray and the job’s done in double-quick time … Well, according to different brands’ marketing spiels.
But do outdoor cleaning products really live up to their care-free and speedy names? As part of our mission to inform consumers of the best NZ has to offer, this year Canstar Blue decided to find out. And we are proud to be able to publish the results of our inaugural research ratings and award for Most Satisfied Customers | Outdoor Surface Cleaners.
To discover NZ’s favourite outdoor surface cleaning brand, we canvassed the opinions of 699 New Zealanders who had purchased and used an outdoor surface cleaner in the past 12 months, across a range of categories, to measure and track their satisfaction.
To decide which outdoor surface cleaning brand offers the best level of customer satisfaction, each was rated across the following categories:
Coming out on top is 30 Seconds, the clear winner of Canstar Blue’s award for Most Satisfied Customers | Outdoor Surface Cleaners.
In our awards 30 Seconds is the only brand to score our top 5-Star rating for Overall Satisfaction. As a no-frills product, 30 Seconds is also the only brand to earn a top rating for Value for Money.
Also scoring well in our awards ratings, Wet & Forget has three 5-Star ratings, for Effectiveness, Ease of Use and Packaging. Plus, it earns a commendable 4-Star rating for Overall Satisfaction.
Rounding out our first award for outdoor cleaners is Simply Green. Its customers recommend it for Value for Money and Environmental Friendliness.
According to our awards research, only around a third of consumers of outdoor cleaning products (31%) are consistently satisfied with the results delivered by their outdoor cleaners.
Therefore, it’s not surprising that the biggest driver of cleaning product customer satisfaction is Effectiveness (49%). And just under a third of cleaning product users (28%) cite Value for Money – an important factor when large quantities of cleaning product are required.
In our ratings, only one brand scores top marks for Value for Money: 30 Seconds. And only one has a 5-Star rating for Effectiveness: Wet & Forget.

Canstar Blue surveyed 2506 New Zealand consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction, via ISO 26362 accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics. The outcomes reported are the results from respondents who had purchased and used an outdoor surface cleaner in the past 12 months. In this case, 699 New Zealanders.
Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then by mean overall satisfaction. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.
