There’s more to a dwelling than four walls and a roof. And how you style your home and your choice of furnishings has an important part to play in transforming your house into a family home.
Regardless of your style choices – whether you plump for Scandi, Hamptons or even chintz – your home furnishings can have a big impact on how you enjoy your home, and on how others perceive it.
They can also have a big impact on your finances, too. Even budget options are big purchases, especially if you’ve got your The Block head on and are giving your entire home a make-over.
So before making any décor decisions, it’s essential to do your homework and get the right guidance from the professionals. That way your curtains won’t clash with your cushions!
And that’s where Canstar Blue can help. As part of our mission to inform consumers of the best NZ has to offer, Canstar Blue canvassed the opinions of 648 New Zealanders who had purchased soft furnishings for their home in the last 12 months, across a range of categories, to measure and track their satisfaction.
To decide which home furnishing retailer offers the best level of customer satisfaction, each was rated across the following categories:
Coming out on top is Guthrie Bowron. In this, our inaugural award, Guthrie Bowron is the only home furnishings brand to earn a 5 Star rating for Overall Satisfaction from customers. Across the board it boasts a further three 5-Star ratings, including for all-important Customer Service and Quality of Installed Product.
The biggest surprise from our survey is that Product Quality isn’t the top driver of customer satisfaction. Out of our six rated categories, it comes bottom of the list! In the top two places, with similar scores, Value for Money and Customer Service are what Kiwi customers want from their home furnishing stores.
Given that Value for Money is so highly rated, it’s pertinent to note that only Spotlight in our ratings scores a top 5 Star rating for Value for Money. While Guthrie Bowron and Curtain Studio both have respectable 4-Star Value for Money ratings. Overall, the main drivers of satisfaction:
|Drivers of satisfaction||%|
|Value for Money||22%|
|Layout of Store/Website||17%|
|Range of Products on Offer||17%|
|Quality of Installed Product||11%|
What influences our choice of home décor? Before the advent of TV DIY makeover shows, glossy magazines were the fount of all inspiration. But now it’s the influencers of social media that have the biggest impact on our design choices.
But while glamourous pics on sites such as Pinterest are inspiration to over a quarter of us (26.3%), one in five are thinking durability instead. For when it comes to home furnishings, 21.7% cite kids and animals as having the biggest impact on their choices. And if you’ve kids, animals or both, you’ll know that translates as tough and easy to clean!
However, regardless of the bewildering range of home stylings out there, your choice of home furnishings store has just been made a lot easier. Because if you’ve got your designs set on a retailer that offers service, value and a quality product, there’s only one clear choice, the winner of Canstar Blue’s inaugural award for Most Satisfied Customers | Home Furnishings: Guthrie Bowron.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then by mean overall satisfaction. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.
