How we rate fans

Our review compares fans on customer satisfaction, so you can discover what Kiwis think about our compared fan brands before you go ahead and make a purchase. Think of it like asking hundreds of your closest friends and family which fan brand they think is best!

Canstar Blue surveyed 728 Kiwis who had bought fans to use at home in the last three years and asked for their feedback on the fan they bought.

  • The outcomes reported in these ratings are measured via Pureprofile’s accredited online research panel.

Respondents rate their satisfaction with their fan brands from zero to ten, where zero is extremely dissatisfied and ten is extremely satisfied. Brand satisfaction was rated by respondents on the following criteria:

  • Overall satisfaction: measures consumer satisfaction with a provider as an individual score NOT a combined total of all criteria.
  • Value for money: the cost is low for the quality and performance of the fan.
  • Performance: the fan cools effectively, hasn’t broken (i.e. is without faults) and its performance hasn’t reduced over time.
  • Ease of use: settings and functions are easy to locate and use.
  • Design: the fan size suits its purpose and the appearance/finish of the appliance is aesthetically pleasing.
  • Functions & features: the fan has adequate cooling functions and extra features, such as a timer, remote, etc.

The winning brand is the one that receives the highest Overall Satisfaction rating once all the scores from the Overall Satisfaction criteria are combined and averaged.

  • Overall Satisfaction is asked as a specific question and represents an individual measure, not a combined total of all criteria.
  • When we cannot determine a clear winner from the criteria for the Overall Satisfaction rating, we will then look at the other criteria measured in the rating.
    • The brand with the highest number of five-star ratings within the supporting criteria will become the five-star recipient in overall satisfaction, and thus win the award. If a clear leader still cannot be determined from the supporting criteria, joint winners will be declared.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included, so not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The brands rated in this survey are listed below in order of best overall satisfaction.

  • Dyson
  • Goldair

The best fan brands in NZ

The brands rated are listed below in order of best overall satisfaction.

1. Dyson

Dyson

Dyson’s products are renowned for their quality. And despite their higher price points, they’re a hit in Kiwi households. This year, Dyson has achieved the hot-cold double, earning Canstar’s Portable Heaters Award, as well as our Fans Award.

In our award research, Dyson achieves top 5-Star ratings across five out of six categories, for: Design, Ease of Use, Features, and Overall Satisfaction.

For Value for Money, Dyson earns 3 Stars, which is by no means a measure of dissatisfaction. Rather it shows that Dyson’s customers are happy with the levels of value offered by their purchases, which do come at higher price points than most fans offered by other brands.

Dyson’s fans are renowned for their unique, bladeless designs, which produce smoother currents of cooling air. The brand’s range comprises seven models, four of which also offer heating functionality.

Its cooling fans start from around $400 for a basic tower fan, while its most expensive model, the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool HP2 De-NOx, removes ultrafine particles and pollutants from the air and retails for $1299.

2. Goldair

Goldair offers an impressive range of fans, including desk, ceiling and wall fans, plus pedestal, bladeless tower fans and powerful workshop models, many of which feature wi-fi and remote controls.

Goldair’s prices start at $100, for its compact desk fan, and go up to around $500 for heat-cool tower fan models.

3. Living & Co

Distributed by The Warehouse, Living & Co offers a range of affordable appliances and homewares, including 13 fans, that cover the following categories:

Desk fans: Small fans that are often powered by USB, meaning they can be plugged into a laptop. Living & Co offers an affordable range of desk fans, starting from just $20 for small USB plastic models, to a larger plug-in, metal fan for $49.

Floor fans: Offer stronger cooling across a wider area. Prices from $30 for a 30cm box fan, to $99 for Living & Co’s most expensive tower fan.

Pedestal fans: Feature adjustable stands, prices from $19-$39. Living & Co’s most expensive model comes with a remote control.

Tower fans: Living & Co’s tower fans boast features including: bladeless technology, timers, remote controls and temperature displays. Prices range from $59-$129.

4. De’Longhi

De’Longhi is known for its well-designed, quality home appliances. Its range of fans encompasses three quiet pedestal fans and three tower fans, which cost between $100-$200.

All models feature remote controls, while De’Longhi’s most expensive tower fan comes with a dust filter, for cleaner air.
