Tax Agent Reviews & Tax Refunds– what you need to know

For many of New Zealand’s 3.6 million personal income tax payers, tax might feel like a bit of a one-way-street.  It’s that bit of money you work hard for but never see, the disappointing deduction on your payslip, and it’s usually a lot more than you would like.  But it doesn’t always have to be that way.

Sure, you will still need to pay your personal income tax, but did you know you can apply to get some of it back in the event you’ve paid a bit too much, and it’s surprising how easily that can happen. A bonus for a job well done, change of job or change of personal circumstance can all impact the amount of tax you pay.  There are a myriad of reasons, some of them pretty technical, so navigating the financial path to your tax return can be a difficult one, but don’t worry, help is at hand.

Tax agents are specialists you can engage to liaise with the IRD (Inland Revenue Department) on your behalf.  You give them some basic personal details and information about your earnings, authority to speak to the IRD on your behalf, and they do the rest. Hopefully, at the end of it you get a tax refund, but in case you don’t many agents operate a no refund, no fee policy, so you really have nothing to lose.

Recent Canstar Blue research amongst people who have used a tax agent in the last two years found that one in four people have received a refund every time they have applied for one. With over $30billion personal income tax collected in New Zealand last year, it would be nice to think a bit of that could end up back in your pocket! So, how much tax are you paying?

Taxable Income Tax Rate
Up to $14,000 10.5%
Over $14,000 and up to $48,000 17.5%
Over $48,000 and up to $70,000 30.0%
Remaining income over $70,000 33.0%

Frequently Asked Questions

Canstar Blue commissioned I-view to survey 2,500 New Zealand consumers across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction. The outcomes reported are the results from New Zealanders who have used a tax agent in the last two years – in this case, 587 New Zealanders.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then alphabetically. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.
