Netflix to Neon: the Top Streaming Shows in NZ

Looking for something to watch across Netflix, Neon and all NZ streaming platforms? Check out the top streaming shows and films with Canstar Blue.

Streaming services have taken over. Where once Netflix stood alone, countless more have joined. Apple TV+, Disney+, Neon, Prime Video, TVNZ on Demand and Acorn TV have all become strong competitors, fighting for a share of our streaming revenue. And while more competition has secured higher budget shows and better quality viewing, the choice can, at times, be overwhelming. Sometimes it can feel like your most-watched show is, well, your streaming provider’s home screen!

So to help make your viewing life easier, Canstar joined up with JustWatch, to bring you a regular round-up of the top streaming shows and films currently playing in lounge rooms across the country.

Read on to see which movies and shows Kiwis couldn’t get enough of over the last month.

At a glance

Top Gun: Maverick is here and, in preparation, Kiwis have been rewatching the cult classic, which is No.1 on our top streaming movies list. More than 30 years after the original, both Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer make their return, reprising their roles as Maverick and Iceman in the long-awaited follow-up, which has suffered delays since its original slated release in 2019.

In second place, the latest from indie distributor A24, Everything Everywhere All at Once makes a splash. An absurdist, mind-bending, multiverse jumping, indie-sci-fi, drama-comedy (yes, really), it follows an American-Chinese laundromat owner (Michelle Yeoh) as she attempts to prevent an unknown figure from destroying the multiverse.

From the creators of the equally bizarre Swiss Army Man, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, Everything Everywhere All at Once jumps from the absurd and hilarious to the heartfelt with ease, and has critics and viewers raving. There’s even some early Oscar buzz in the air.

The top streaming show this week is The Boys. Starring our very own Karl Urban, it follows a team taking down corrupt superheroes who abuse their powers. A far cry from your usual superhero flick.

Other popular shows include the acclaimed, Ben Stiller directed, Apple TV+ series Severence. The thriller follows a team of office workers whose memories have been surgically divided between their work and personal lives; when a mysterious colleague appears outside of work, it begins a journey to discover the truth about their jobs.

Disney+ gaining at Netflix’s expense

For a long time, Netflix was almost synonymous with streaming. Much like Google is for an internet search or Tupperware is for food storage containers. But that’s changed a lot over the past few years.

Much has been written recently about Netflix’s loss of global market share, but it’s not alone. Prime Video is down 4% since January 2021, only slightly behind Netflix’s 5% loss.

And it’s clear that an increase in quality competition is taking its toll. Since launching in November of 2019, Disney+ has earned 18% of the Streaming-Video-On-Demand market, as it continued to launch into new markets.

Initially seen as a great option for the kids, Disney+ is proving to be a streaming giant, offering exclusive content streaming from all its subsidiaries. That means content from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm (Star Wars), 20th Century Fox, National Geographic and more. So there are plenty of shows and films, for everyone.

And because Disney+ is pulling all its content from its competitors, its gain comes at the expense of Netflix, which has seen a loss of high-profile content and, subsequently, market share.

Looking locally, Netflix continues to dominate. Although, its share is shrinking. In the first quarter of this year, it suffered a slight drop in numbers while Disney+ saw a slight gain. Prime Video also experienced a small rise, bucking the global trend that has seen it lose significant global share over the past 18 months.
